About Dr. Hwang

Caroline Hwang, MD, MMM, is a compassionate gastroenterologist at Digestive Disease Consultants of Orange County, with locations in Irvine, Huntington Beach, Tustin, and Foothill Ranch, California.

Dr. Hwang attended medical school at the University of California at Los Angeles (UCLA). She completed her residency at Columbia University Medical Center, followed by a fellowship in gastroenterology at the University of California at San Francisco (UCSF), where she was an inflammatory bowel disease clinical scholar.

Early on in her medical training, Dr. Hwang was drawn to the specialty of treating digestive diseases. This was primarily because she saw the high levels of distress and suffering that gastrointestinal symptoms could cause to patients. Since there also is often a stigma around discussing bowel issues, becoming a gastroenterologist meant having a genuine opportunity to truly make an impact on people’s lives.

In particular, Dr. Hwang has a passion for treating inflammatory bowel disease (or “IBD”, which includes Crohn’s disease, ulcerative colitis, microscopic colitis, and celiac disease). She obtained an additional year of specialty training to gain expertise in managing these complex diseases. She also spent 7 years at the University of Southern California (USC) as the director of their IBD center, developing a multidisciplinary care team and also researching cutting-edge therapies.

Her approach to the physician-patient relationship is collaborative – to encourage patients to become actively involved in their medical treatment plan. She believes the key to optimal outcomes is to provide comprehensive care that includes preventative medicine, diet/nutrition, and stress reduction.

Her collaborative approach has led to many awards, including Super Doctors – Southern California (2020), Top Doctors – Pasadena (2013-2019), Top Doctors – LA Magazine (2019), Rising Stars – LA Magazine (2013-2018), Chair – Medical Advisory Board of the Crohn’s and Colitis Foundation (Los Angeles Chapter), Instructor of Year (USC Gastroenterology Division), Alpha Omega Alpha, and the GI Fellows’ Award (WE CARE).

Dr. Hwang is also a member of several organizations, including Phi Beta Kappa, Alpha Omega Alpha, the Crohn’s and Colitis Foundation, the American Gastroenterological Association American Society of Gastrointestinal Endoscopy, the American College of Gastroenterology, the Southern California Society of Gastroenterology.

When she is not caring for patients, Dr. Hwang enjoys traveling, yoga, exploring new restaurants and museums, and bicycling/hiking with her dog and husband.
