Early on in my medical training, I was drawn to the specialty of treating digestive diseases. This was primarily because I saw the high levels of distress and suffering that gastrointestinal symptoms could cause to patients. Since there also is often stigma around discussing bowel issues, becoming a gastroenterologist meant having a genuine opportunity to truly make an impact on people’s lives.
In particular, I have a passion for treating inflammatory bowel disease (or “IBD”, which includes Crohn’s disease, ulcerative colitis, microscopic colitis, and celiac disease). I obtained an additional year of specialty training to gain expertise in managing these complex diseases. I also spent 7 years at the University of Southern California (USC) as the director of their IBD center, developing a multidisciplinary care team and also researching cutting-edge therapies.
Fortunately, medical advancements for IBD have been rapidly evolving, so patients have increased options for their treatment. My approach to the physician-patient relationship is collaborative – to encourage patients to become actively involved in their medical treatment plan. I believe the key to optimal outcomes is to provide comprehensive care that includes preventative medicine, diet/nutrition and stress reduction.
When I am not caring for patients, I enjoy traveling, yoga, exploring new restaurants and museums, and bicycling/hiking with my dog and husband.
