It was my first contact with Dr. Hwang. Due to COVID-19, our meeting was conducted over the internet via ZOOM. Dr. Hwang asked me several questions and explained the possibilities of what what might have caused the ulcer. In addition to offering additional tests, she further explained the associated risks if not treated and possible procedures once the cause of the ulcer is determined. Dr. Hwang is very caring and thorough.

I moved to Orange County from the East Coast with no contacts. While researching I found Dr. Paul Lee to be a good doctor so I had my GI from New Jersey forward my chart which included a diagnosis of Chrohns and a prescription for Remicade following a mess of abdominal surgeries following a perforation during a colonoscopy following my initial diagnosis of colitis. Met Dr Lee for the first time and we had a very long meeting where he never looked at the clock or the door, just analyzed my chart and really listened most of the time. Before putting me on Remicade most out-of-state doctors would’ve taken the opportunity to send me for a colonoscopy at first. But with enough evidence and gathering that I was terrified of a colonoscopy he said not now, and wrote the prescription as it had been in Jersey for five years and then his office helped me find a comfortable infusion center. Saw him once the following year. Two years after that visit Doctor Lee himself called me out of the blue, asked me how I was doing, and gently suggested it was time to do a colonoscopy, which it was. He reads the charts. But I hadn’t seen him in two years - who pays attention like that? I reminded him of the diagnosed friability (hypersensitivity) of my colon and he assured me that he would use the utmost caution. He also was non-alarmist, said it didn’t have to be now, just soon and to call him when I was ready. I called back a couple of months later and the office helped me schedule the appointment. Dr. Lee himself made several generous concessions of his time to make sure that he was able to get me in during the narrow window I gave him during a custody battle. The day before the procedure, his office staff was immediately available when I called with important questions about the prep. When I got to the hospital, Dr. Lee spoke to me at length. Went over everything that would happen and above all reassured me that he remembered every bit of our conversation about this years before, and assured me his first priority was my safety and being gentle. It is common to see some blood and such immediately after a colonoscopy, along with pain for a few days. The day after Dr Lee’s colonoscopy I ate a full breakfast and was driving my girlfriend around to her own appointments. Never saw a streak of red, no pain. It was like nothing had gone on. This is not normal- this doctor knew that “normal” treatment could send me into a downward spiral. That is a specialist. What’s special about this one is that he cares. -Jeff Budwick
